The 35th edition of BI-MU, the international exhibition for metal-forming and metal-cutting machine tools, robotics, automation, digital manufacturing and additive manufacturing, concluded on October 16 at fieramilano Rho, Italy. The four-day exhibition, held from October 13 to 16, attracted 26,000 trade professionals and provided a platform for technology demonstrations, industry discussions and business networking.
Promoted by UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE and organised by EFIM-ENTE FIERE ITALIANE MACCHINE, the exhibition brought together 448 participating companies, of which 30% were international exhibitors. Companies from Austria, China, Finland, Germany, India, Spain, Taiwan, South Korea, France, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the United States were among those represented.
International visitors accounted for 6% of total attendance, representing 80 countries. The event also welcomed 120 invited participants, including industrial end users, trade analysts and journalists, through an Incoming Mission organised by UCIMU in association with the Italian Trade Agency (ICE) and Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Around 20 exhibitors participated in the Start-up Area, which was organised with the support of the Italian Trade Agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The initiative provided emerging companies with an opportunity to present technologies and products relevant to the capital goods manufacturing sector.
BI-MU also hosted representatives from the European Union’s Machinery Unit and CECIMO, the European Association of Manufacturing Technologies. The delegation met UCIMU executives to discuss issues affecting the European manufacturing and machinery industry.
A new Associations and Network Hub was introduced to provide trade associations with a dedicated space for interaction, knowledge sharing and discussions on regional manufacturing sectors and supply chains. More than 50 meetings and conferences were organised during the exhibition. The opening conference at the BI-MUpiù Arena brought together representatives from government, industry and business associations. Participants included Valentino Valentini, Deputy Minister at Italy’s Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy; Giovanni Bozzetti, President of Fondazione Fiera Milano; Simona Greco, Hosted Exhibitions Director of Fiera Milano; and Luca Durante of the Italian Trade Agency.
Industry representatives included Gian Piero Cutillo, Co-General Manager of Leonardo, and Roberto Vavassori, Executive Director of Brembo and President of ANFIA. The discussions were chaired by UCIMU President Riccardo Rosa and moderated by Paolo Bricco of Il Sole 24 Ore. Special forums focused on aerospace and defence and the energy sector, with executives from international companies and Italian small and medium-sized enterprises discussing production requirements, industrial operations and technology developments.
Education and skills development were also important parts of the programme. Around 4,000 students registered for guided tours of the exhibition, where they were introduced to manufacturing technologies and equipment. The Skills Area in Hall 24 hosted initiatives organised by UCIMU Academy and Fondazione UCIMU, including the second edition of ROBOTGAMES, a robotics and automation competition for high school students.
The International Conference VLF4EU brought together approximately 30 researchers from Denmark, France, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Italy to discuss virtual learning factory technologies. ANIPLA also organised a discussion titled ‘Value, Future, Impact: Work According to the New Generation’, focusing on young people’s expectations of the workplace.
The exhibition introduced Additive Future Lab, an initiative promoted by the Italian Association of Additive Technologies for students at higher technical institutes. The BI-MU FutureTechAward was also launched to recognise manufacturing innovations in mechanical engineering, digitalisation and sustainability.
The 35th edition marked 70 years since the first BI-MU exhibition. To commemorate the occasion, EFIM organised a photographic exhibition titled ’70 Years of Machine Tools’ in cooperation with the Historical Archive of Fondazione Fiera Milano. The exhibition’s digital reach also increased. Between January 1, 2025 and October 16, 2026, its website recorded 80,000 unique visitors, up 7% compared with 2024. Its social media community reached 12,419 followers, an increase of 14% over the end of the previous edition. The next BI-MU exhibition, the 36th edition, is scheduled for October 10–13, 2028. The next major event for the sector will be EMO MILANO 2027, scheduled for October 4–8, 2027, at fieramilano.
