AM Europe
From research to production: Europe maps its additive manufacturing capabilities

Europe has a strong foundation in additive manufacturing (AM) research, but the current challenge is to translate that scientific excellence into qualified, repeatable and commercially sustainable industrial capability. This is the core message of AM Europe’s new report, Mapping European Additive Manufacturing Research Capabilities, published in October 2026
Based on an analysis of 83 research organisations across 18 countries, the study maps seven key competency areas: materials, digital technologies, testing and inspection, process qualification and industrial applications. Metal additive manufacturing and advanced materials are present in 66 research centres; circularity, repair and industrial adoption in 65; testing, inspection and quality assurance in 63. Cross-cutting capabilities also emerge in areas such as aerospace and defence, artificial intelligence, polymers and composites, medical applications and other specialist fields.
According to the report, Europe already possesses many of the technical foundations needed for wider AM adoption: research centres that combine materials development, process monitoring, qualification support and shared equipment. These capabilities can help companies improve resource efficiency, extend component life and strengthen supply chain resilience.
However, access remains a critical issue: SMEs struggle to identify the most suitable facilities, compare services and fund qualification pathways. Inconsistent data formats and testing requirements make it difficult to reuse research results, while lengthy funding procedures and the lack of “industrial ownership” of demonstrators at the end of public projects hinder market uptake.
The report outlines a potential European policy agenda based on more accessible infrastructure, shared testing, reusable evidence and clearer pathways from research to production. Sector-specific demonstrators, stronger industrial partnerships and support for customer-site trials can help build credible business cases.
In this context, AM Europe positions itself as a facilitator between research organisations, companies and policymakers, with the aim of translating Europe’s research strengths into concrete industrial capability, supporting competitiveness, sustainability, defence readiness and medical innovation.
The full report can be requested directly from AM Europe for further insights and collaboration opportunities within the European manufacturing community.
