IPercept raises $16.5m to bring condition monitoring to CNC machine tools

The Swedish spin-out’s plug-and-play device reads a machine’s own motion to report the wear of individual components on CNC machines of any brand, model or age

Stockholm-based IPercept has closed a $16.5m Series A round to expand its CNC machine monitoring technology into the US. The round was co-led by Isogon Ventures and 2150, with existing investors Luminar Ventures, RunwayFBU, J12 Ventures and AI. The fund also took part.

A spin-out from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, IPercept began commercialising its technology in 2022. The system is based on a single patented device mounted on the moving part of a CNC machine. It picks up micrometre-scale motion and converts it into component-level condition data, showing which parts are wearing, how quickly, and what needs to be done before production stops. According to the company, it works on machines of any brand, model or age, and needs no connection to the machine controller or the customer’s IT network.

IPercept says the technology addresses a gap in how machine tools are observed: the controller commands motion but does not measure mechanical condition, while conventional vibration sensors were designed for pumps and motors rather than for machines with many interacting components. The company claims that without its solution it can take two days of manual work to understand why a single machine failed, and that average machine efficiency has stayed at 50–60% for decades.

The devices are already live at more than 30 manufacturers, including Airbus, Bosch, Hitachi Energy, Scania and Volvo, the company reports. Industrial service providers such as Konecranes, Quant, DynaMate and MTT use the technology as the basis for their own monitoring services. IPercept points to reducing unplanned downtime and improving overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) as the main benefits.

Karoly Szipka, CEO of IPercept

The new funding will be used to launch and scale operations in the US, including the first dedicated local hires, and to extend the company’s data platform with add-on intelligence applications.

«CNC machine tools make every other machine on Earth, and until now almost nobody could see inside them while they run», said IPercept founder and CEO Karoly Szipka. He added that the technology required a new measurement principle, five years of research and four years of real-world data.
